History

  Gateway Baptist Church began January 7, 1996, in the Lumberton Housing Authority, with forty-one members, including Pastor Peters and First Lady Debra Peters. However, you never know just what the LORD has in store for you but when you act upon faith, GOD makes things happen.

GOD gave Pastor Peters a vision to explore many ways to help the members and embrace the community. Since the Church organized in 1996, we’ve purchased five acres of land, built and paid for the first, second, and third phases of the church building with over 9,000 square feet with a seating capacity of 500. 

As Pastor Peters continued to listen to GOD, he was inspired to build the Lumberton Family Life Center. This facility is over 17,400 square feet and houses a gym, fitness room, snack bar, tutoring area, computer lab and a family resource center. At the present time the center hosts weddings, banquets, birthday parties, a youth basketball league and many other activities that serve the community as well as the church.

In 2005, Pastor Peters again seeking GOD for wisdom on how to add on to the current facility with no funds, just faith. GOD began to impart wisdom and once again we began to build. This phase consist of the Pastor’s Study, Music Staff Office, three additional restrooms, Choir Stand, Baptism poll and pulpit. The phase added an additional 2500 square feet. 

Proverbs 28:18 reads: Where there is no vision the people perish, but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

 “GOD gives the vision to the leader and then HE makes provisions in people to carry out the vision of the man of GOD”. 

And the "Vision" lives on!!!
